Edith Josie

A much loved Gwich'in elder, Edith Josie rose to international fame in her 40's for her newspaper column that was known for its insightful, and sometimes humorous, observations of life in her Arctic community of Old Crow.

Although she was fluent in both the Han and Gwich'in languages, Miss Josie wrote stories of everyday Gwich'in life in English, while retaining the style of her first language.

Her newspaper column entitled “Here Are the News” ran from 1962 - 2005. It was published by the Whitehorse Star, and syndicated to 146 newspapers around the world.
